When you look at the most successful blogs online today, there is a common theme I find in all of them. All the authors have strong technical backgrounds and are able to relate this to their blog.
Not just in terms of content, but by being able to customize their placement, create custom widgets or modify features that don't suit. It's certainly a handy background to have, it not only helps your blog stand out, but gives you a unique feel and also provides a good springboard and respect factor when it comes time to talk about particular techie subjects.
Do you think you need to be a true techie to give your blog an edge in blog land? Sure, you can always hire some help to get around technical situations, but there lies a problem where you must convey your idea to another and have them create your thoughts... Not as smooth as doing it yourself.
To simplify it even more, if you saw a true bare bones blog (ie - no theme, design, banner or anything) just great content in raw text. Would you still be drawn to it? Do you need the flair and technical skills to get a head start?
I'd love to hear peoples thoughts on this!

I think everyone who can write good content has the chance to make it big...
with the existing blogging platforms today (e.g. wordpress, blogger etc), anyone who has access to the internet can start blogging :)
also, some of the big names in the blogging industry are not really techie, they hire people to do the techie stuffs for them :)
Good day
