I stumbled on a website today John Chow Graphs that is a clear, concise and visual record of the uber success the Chow man has seen since launching his blog in late 2006.
Kicked off by a smart entrepreneur, the visual record of the John Chow success is a good motivator and teacher for anyone willing to look and learn. (It saves you having to visit John's site and wade through posts about mattresses and other promotions!) (Sorry John had to be said!)
Displaying graphs and information from when John Chow kicked his blog off in late 2006 when he was earning a tiny $300 just from AdSense, this new graphical site tracks and discusses the John Chow journey until present day - where he is now earning $27,000+ from advertising and other means on his popular blog.
I was really impressed with this new idea, (also impressive was the designers idea to gently embed some AdSense units into this new graphical site to turn a profit, a smart way of capitalizing on the John Chow name and success!) I immediately thought this must be a brainchild of John Chow - capitalizing on another method to bring more success.
But no, this new John Chow Graph site was designed and developed by the guy behind 365tofreedom.com a blog I just checked out and I must say I was also impressed with his super smooth blog design and nice content. This is certainly a guy I will be subscribing too!
What to take away from the John Chow Graphs site is not only the motivation and belief factor, that blogs do infact make good money - but also 'how' it was done. Many online guru's will tell you 'content is king' and while in some instances this is true. In many successful blogs, it doesn't play a part.
My opinion on the key to making decent money from a blog is to ensure the following:
- Blog Promotion. Because promotion = traffic. (Get your lame butt on social sites, forums and advertise everywhere to get visitors through your doors)
- Blog, Monetize Well. The right ads, placed correctly and maximize earnings. Easier said than done, but Chow is the master of this. Even way back in the early days, you can read how Chow was fiddling with his AdSense sizes, placement and blending with the site.
Whether you like sites like Digg.com, Sphinn or other social sites - they do work. I took John Chow's advice from one of his posts earlier this week and went hard at digging a recent article, the result was a traffic spike of 500 hits. Something good content hasn't been able to bring alone.
Promote baby, promote!
