Stolen Nokia Chase Ends

If you read my post earlier this week about my stolen Nokia 6680 phone, you would know what a saga I have been through - not only having the phone stolen while drunk, but then turning detective and chasing down the culprit.

Anyway, I did manage to find the culprit and thought I had scared him enough to hand over the phone. After initially agreeing to give me back the phone in return for no Police action, the thief met me and said he couldn't get his hands on the phone anymore. (I suspect he had sold or hidden the phone.)

The guy was in his early 20's and your typical jobless loser, a real bum. Even if I took along some standover guys and tried to threaten him physically, I don't even know if any result would come from it.

So I basically told him, give me the phone or $400 replacement cost or I go to the cops. I haven't heard from him since, so I have given the Police the green light to charge him and have begun discussions with Vodafone to have the handset blacklisted (by the IEMI number) so the handset is rendered useless.

Yeah as much as it pisses me off the whole situation, it's a lesson learned from getting too drunk, losing your wits and snoozing dangerously. Man, I could have been kicked or bashed - which would have been a tonne worse obviously. So I won't be getting drunk in a hurry!

My boss has been understanding about the loss of the phone, but obviously I have to either replace it or pass over the value in cash. I do have a Nokia 6680 personally which is a co-incidence, its a cell phone that I brought over here from Australia, but it's locked to the Hutchison 3G network. I've been trying to get this thing unlocked so I can pass it over to the boss as a replacement for 6680 stolen last Friday night. Seems there is a stack of internet sites offering unlocking services, I am not sure how trustworthy they are. Hutch 3G in Australia are supposedly calling me back to see if they can work something out for me.

Getting back to the thief, should I just let the Cops do their thing? Or should I deal out my own form of punishment in the form of hired thugs? Any ideas folks?
